The concept of porchfest began back in 2007 in Ithaca, New York, and on the heels of its success, porchfests began spreading to over a hundred cities across the United States and Canada.
Here in Brunswick, Georgia, an enthusiastic group of Historic Old Town neighbors got together in 2018 and decided to try creating our own version of porchfest. We knew the inviting front porches of our historic homes would be the perfect backdrop to showcase the diverse talent of our performing arts community. We also knew our neighbors would embrace the idea of turning their porches into stages for a day. We culled together each of our talents and spent months organizing and promoting the inaugural event and managed to sign up 28 porches and performances, with everyone involved graciously donating their time. Our organizing committee (the neighbor gnomes), took a risk investing money, hoping the inaugural Brunswick PorchFest would be a success. On the day of the big event, the weather took a turn, pouring rain all day. But the community showed up, they stayed, and they danced in the rain to some great performances. It was so much fun on a rainy day that we felt it was definitely worth repeating, so our annual Brunswick PorchFest was born!
The following year, in 2019, we doubled our number of porches and performances to 50 and opened up the event to sponsors. The outpouring of support from local businesses was yet another highlight of our community’s goodwill as it ensured this DIY music festival would continue to be sustained as it evolves and grows.
Per our vision, purpose, and guiding principles, Brunswick PorchFest will:
be a free-admission, family-friendly event that celebrates the diversity, uniqueness, and beauty of the Old Town neighborhood and her residents
utilize the talents and generosity of volunteers to plan and produce the event
utilize the talents and generosity of local and regional performers to entertain the community
be a good steward of our resources to produce an event that our local government, community partners, and business partners will be proud to be associated with
reinvest any proceeds back into the downtown Brunswick area
respect our environment by having a minimum impact on our neighborhood and the environment
