Agenda TBD

Minutes of October 22, 2024 Meeting

Meeting called to order by Travis Stegall at 6 pm

Chief Jones – Police Update – Last month crime down 12%. Homicide last month at Reynolds and O: have some leads. 9/18-10/1 nothing serious. PorchFest: 3 off duty officers donated for event
     1. Situation that happened last week with “gunman” and lockdown at Glynn Academy. Backstory: Attempted murder warrants in SC and kidnapping charges. US Marshals were tracking him and didn’t advise us until after the fact which is why neighborhood wasn’t notified. EMA has the ability to send out those alerts so it’s something that can be discussed but they’re careful what they put out.
     2. Million dollar State Grant for security cameras and requested for extra street lights as well. Approved for 60+ streetlights in Brunswick, 16 in historic district. Reviewing security camera companies in the coming weeks to put around downtown.  Map of the proposed lights available here.

Freddie Sams ILA 1423 President. New president of longshoremen’s union, re: Traffic problems.
     1. Employment is huge right now because they are getting so many people from Jax/Sav
     2. Are looking for new property to meet and that will help alleviate parking issues
     3. Busiest 6am, 12pm and 6pm on 4th street.

Jack Daniel. Neighborhood Emergency Resource Planning. A way for neighbors to help neighbors in times of disasters or crisis. Starting a list email jackadaniel@gmail.com to get on the list or for more information.

Sandra Colhard – preferred list for contractors and tradespeople. This would not be endorsed by NPA. Working to get a few people together and presenting next year. Email Sandra Sseac@hotmail.com to recommend someone.

Chris Moline – school redistricting. [Ed. Note: for details on the proposed redistricting , see minutes from Sept. 17 meeting]. This affects all of downtown not just historic Brunswick. Everything South of Gloucester will no longer be zoned for SSE/Oglethorpe. SSI can’t sustain both schools and have reviewed options and both schools will stay elementary schools so we still would need Bwk students to fill those gaps. A lot of questions people have are not getting answered and we are working to determine if this is still exploratory or if it is a “done deal.” Board of Education makes the final decision. Next BOE meeting is November 12 at 6 pm. Everyone has a right to show up and voice their opinion. Public info meeting at SSE Oct. 23, 5:30 pm.

Meeting adjourned, next meeting: Jan. 21, 2025

    Redistricting follow-up from Chris Moline

Thanks to those who showed up last night at the HBNPA and I encourage you, as well as those who couldn’t make it last night to attend the informational event this evening at SSE as well.  We all should hopefully have more answers for the “why” afterwards.

Below is a link on Google Drive to demographic and map data as well as contact info for Dr. Spence, the school board (BOE) and upcoming BOE meetings. If you want to be involved after tonight’s meeting, please let us know and we will add you to the list and keep you informed on direction.

Please feel free to pass this along to anyone else you feel necessary.  CM
